Food is essential to life and a basic human right. It should not be treated like any other commodity. Almost 90% of agricultural products are consumed domestically and only 10% are traded internationally, yet the World Trade Organization (WTO) and neo-liberal policies interfere and enforce rules on the 90% consumed domestically.

The Sugar Workers Solidarity Network (SWS) strongly condemns the brutal murder of Ric Ramos, president of the Central Azucarera de Tarlac Labor Union (CATLU), last October 25, 2005 in Barangay Mapalacsiao, Tarlac. Ramos is the 20th victim of political killings in Central Luzon since Brigadier General Jovito "The Butcher" Palparan was stationed at the 7th Infantry Division in Tarlac on September 2, 2005.

Workers of Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company ( LCMC ) ended their 93-day strike with the signing of an MOA between the Lepanto Employees Union and LCMC. The strike which commenced on 2nd June 2005 due to the deadlock in the collective bargaining negotiations ended on 4th September 2005.

Updates on the Protest letter to Minister of Social Protection, Bogota, Columbia

August 31, 2005

The Sintrasplendor Union representing the workers of Splendor Flowers announced on 31st August 2005, that after ten months of its inception, the Minister of Social Protection, Columbia, had finally reinstated the legal recognition of the Union. The Minister had earlier revoked the recognition that led to strong protest by union members, and followed by support actions both locally and from other countries, calling on the Minister to revoke his cancellation order.
